The central question that guided my sustained investigation was what it feels like to be afraid of speaking and expressing myself to others. I chose to explore this topic by focusing on the physical and psychological experiences that accompany this phobia.

The color red was used to represent tightness or tension in the throat. (Digital photograph)

I cut a hole in the giclee print and added text to represent words that have been repressed by fear. (Giclee print, text on paper)

I burned the giclee print and used tangled strips of paper to represent the knot in my throat. (Burned giclee print {manipulated with Adobe PhotoShop}, digital photograph)

I experimented with black ink over text to portray my words being "drowned out" by noise. (Digital photograph)

I photographed myself through glass to show that psychological barrier from a different perspective. (Digital photograph)

I used text on paper and dramatic light to represent a "spotlight" on every word I say. (Digital photograph)

The color red represents pressure and the saturation emphasizes the nervous pounding of the heart. (Digital photograph {manipulated with Adobe PhotoShop})

I used plastic wrap to represent the psychological barrier to communication created by my fear. (Digital photograph)

I used typed words on paper as a symbol for spoken words. (Digital photograph)
